Dustin's Story

Dustin and his service dog Lincoln were placed together in February 2019. The two are a perfect match, providing each other support daily. Read Dustin's original story below, and leave a comment congratulating them on their recent placement!

My name is Dustin Riedemann, and I was born and raised in Le Mars, Iowa. I joined the U.S. Army a few years after high school and enlisted into the Infantry. I was in the Army for a short period of time before I got the orders to deploy to eastern Afghanistan.

I was stationed with the 101st Airborne division out of Fort Campbell, KY. We were deployed to Kunar Province, Afghanistan for a period of 1 year. During this year, we were involved in many firefights and combat situations. We worked closely with other areas of the military including the Army Rangers and Navy Seals. During my time overseas, there were many times when we didn't think we were going to come home, and unfortunately for some of my friends, this became a reality. Losing friends in a combat zone has been one of the hardest things I have had to learn to deal with. I was also injured while overseas being struck by a rocket propelled grenade (RPG) and was left unconscious for 2 days while suffering a mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). I have since fully recovered physically, but have been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) due to the severe events that happened while deployed. I was medically discharged from the Army in early 2018 due to combat related injuries including PTSD and degenerative arthritis in my back.

Having a service dog for these reasons would greatly impact my life in a positive way. I would always have a companion and someone there for me when times get tough. I would also not have to worry about having to bend over and pick items up off the floor for those times when my arthritis is acting up. I look forward to this process and where it will take me.

I am so thrilled that Lincoln has been matched with you. I am a volunteer who worked with him as a puppy and a young dog. Thank you so much for what you have done for your country.
