Dylan's Story

Dylan and service dog Zach were placed together in May 2018. Read their original story below and leave a comment congratulating them on their placement!

Our names are Jim and Chanda and we are blessed to have RFI assist us with providing our son, Dylan, an opportunity for a better life!

Dylan is 11 years old, in 4th grade, and will be transitioning to a middle school in the fall of 2018. Dylan is a big brother to his devoted sister, Madison. He is non-verbal and was diagnosed with Autism when he was 2 years old. We are encouraged that a service dog from Retrieving Freedom will assist Dylan with transitions, especially in attending a new school later this year. Dylan loves to play his iPad, watch Veggie Tales, listen to Michael Buble and the Gaither Vocal Band. He has an infectious laugh and is very affectionate when cuddling and giving great hugs!

Before starting the application process, we began identifying the benefits of a service dog for Dylan. We quickly realized the numerous benefits of a service dog and how it would enrich day-to-day activities at home, school, and in public.

The biggest advantages of having a service dog for Dylan are security and support. Being tethered to a service dog will assist us with age appropriate efforts to keep Dylan safe in public, as he is unaware of his surroundings, and also assist with behaving more appropriately in social situations. A service dog will also assist us at home as a companion and support when listening to music, watching Veggie Tales, and encouraging Dylan to sleep in his own bed.
