Companion Dog Program for Gold and White Star Families
Retrieving Freedom’s Companion Dog Program for Gold and White Star Families provides emotional support to families grieving the loss of a loved one due to military service or suicide. Through this program, career-change dogs—those not suited for full service work—are placed as companion animals with families who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
Gold Star Families have lost a service member in the line of duty, while White Star Families have lost a loved one, often a Veteran or first responder, to suicide. These losses carry deep emotional impact, especially for children, who are at increased risk for anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The need for ongoing, meaningful support is clear.
Studies show animals can play a powerful role in the healing process. Companion dogs offer comfort, connection, and stability during grief. By partnering with organizations like Wear Blue: Run to Remember and America’s Mighty Warriors, Retrieving Freedom helps bring hope and healing to those who need it most.
