Release Dog FAQ

What is a "Released Dog"?

A released dog, also known as a career change dog, is one that did not move forward to become a Service Dog due to medical or behavioral reasons. These dogs are still wonderful companions and ready to thrive in the right home.

What breeds are available?

All released dogs are Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, or Lab-Golden Crosses, raised and trained through Retrieving Freedom’s program.

How old are the dogs?

Most released dogs are between 1 and 2 years old and will be at varying levels of learning their basic obedience skills.

Can anyone apply?

Yes. Anyone living in the United States can apply, regardless of location or profession. Most of our released dogs are adopted into regular family homes.

What are the home requirements?

A safe, stable environment with proper care and companionship is essential. A fenced yard is not required, and prior dog experience is welcome but not necessary.

What is the adoption fee?

The adoption fee is $1,000, which can be paid in full or through a monthly payment plan. That fee goes right back into our mission, helping us raise and train more Service Dogs for Veterans with disabilities and children with autism.

What happens after I apply?

Your application will be reviewed and added to the waitlist for the current calendar year. We will contact you if a released dog becomes available that matches your home and lifestyle.

Can I meet the dog first?

Yes. If you are contacted about a possible match, you will be invited to meet the dog and do a short home visit before finalizing the adoption.
