Retrieving Freedom is proud to celebrate the placement of Alena and her Service Dog, Zuma, who are now officially a working team.
Even in these early days, Zuma is already making a meaningful difference in Alena’s daily life. Her presence has had an impact in ways the family did not expect so quickly, showing just how powerful the bond between a Service Dog and their partner can be.
One moment, in particular, captured the significance of this partnership. While at a bowling alley, Alena became overwhelmed. In the past, this would have meant shutting down and needing to leave. This time was different. With Zuma by her side, Alena was able to pause, regulate, and find calm.
After just a few minutes, she said something her mom had never heard before:
“I think I’m ready to try and play again.”
That moment speaks volumes. It reflects not only the support Zuma provides, but also the confidence and independence that are already beginning to grow within Alena.
Service Dogs like Zuma are trained to help children with autism navigate overwhelming environments, build emotional regulation skills, and create opportunities for engagement that may not have been possible before. For families, these moments are more than progress. They are life-changing.
Congratulations to Alena and Zuma on becoming an official team. Their journey is just beginning, and we are honored to be part of it.
