When Rex asked us how we could possibly let these dogs go after all the time, love, and work poured into them, we had an answer ready. It is Veterans like Rex who make every goodbye worth it.
Rex came to Retrieving Freedom carrying a weight that many Veterans know well. After losing his wife to cancer a few years ago, he has been navigating life while managing PTSD. The kind of quiet battles that do not always show on the outside but shape every part of a day. He needed more than support. He needed a partner.
Lenny began his training journey in Missouri under the care of trainer Kirby, where his steady temperament and easygoing nature stood out early. When the time came, he transferred to Iowa to meet the Veteran he had been preparing to serve. From the moment Rex and Lenny met, the connection was unmistakable. Rex loved him instantly.
Their placement was delayed briefly while Rex recovered from some medical challenges, but the wait only confirmed what we already knew. Lenny was the right dog. His big heart, calm presence, and loyal companionship are exactly what Rex needed by his side. Daily comfort. Quiet confidence. A reason to keep moving forward.
Rex told us he is incredibly happy and grateful to have Lenny in his home. That gratitude is mutual. We give a piece of our heart to every dog we raise and train, but watching one step into his purpose and change a Veteran's life is the reason we do this work.
Rex and Lenny, your journey together is just beginning. We are so proud of this team and deeply grateful to everyone who helped Lenny become the partner Rex deserves.
There are more Veterans waiting. More Rexes carrying weight that a service dog for Veterans with PTSD could help lift. The cost to fully train and place each one is over $50,000, and every placement is made possible by people who believe Veterans deserve this kind of support.
If Rex's story moved you, help us write the next one.
