Retrieving Freedom is looking for dedicated families to foster breeding females and serve as their whelping home, helping bring the next generation of service dogs into the world.
These special dogs live with you as your family pet while also playing an important role in our mission to place service dogs with Veterans and children with autism.
What It Means to Foster a Breeding Female
A breeding female lives with you full-time as part of your family. You provide daily care, structure, and companionship, while Retrieving Freedom manages all breeding decisions and veterinary care.
When she has a litter, you will also serve as her whelping home, providing a safe and loving environment for her and her puppies during their first several weeks of life. Our team provides training, supplies, and full support every step of the way.
Most of the time, she will simply be your companion. Periodically, you will experience the incredible reward of helping raise puppies who will go on to become life-changing service dogs.
Your Role as a Whelping Home
As a whelping home, you will:
Care for mom and puppies from birth until about 8 weeks of age
Provide a safe, clean, indoor environment
Monitor puppies and share updates with the Retrieving Freedom team
Follow Retrieving Freedom’s puppy socialization protocols to help build confident, resilient future service dogs
Receive ongoing support, guidance, and veterinary care from Retrieving Freedom
Why This Role Matters
Every service dog begins with a strong foundation.
By fostering a breeding female and helping raise her puppies, you play a direct role in changing lives. Your involvement helps Retrieving Freedom place more service dogs with individuals who need them most.
Join our mission. Together, we can Retrieve Freedom for so many.
Retirement
When a breeding female retires from the program, foster families are given the opportunity to adopt the dog permanently.
A Foster’s Perspective
From Greta’s foster, Karma Fischer
“Fostering Greta’s puppies brought a special kind of happiness. The quiet rewards of nurturing new life and watching their confidence and curiosity blossom day by day were truly unforgettable. Their journey began in my care, but the love they gave will stay with me long after they’ve gone to their forever homes. It is an experience I will treasure forever.”
